Math-A-Thon and Author Visit On Tap For This Week!
April 27, 2008 by James Hendricks
This past Friday, Ms. Kamienski held an all-school assembly to kick-off this year’s St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon! She told us a little bit about the program and then we watched a short DVD with Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus. Miley encouraged all of our students to get involved with the Math-A-Thon. Last year we set a goal of collecting $4,000. According to Ms. Kamienski, we met and passed that goal. This year’s goal will be $5,000! I know that we can do it. Math-A-Thon forms went home last week. Please get those forms back to me as soon as possible so you can get your math booklet from Ms. Kamienski.
On Wednesday, April 30th, our shared school and public library Mrs. Emily Tinnel will introduce us to author Diane deGroat. She is known for her Gilbert series of children’s books. She will talk to us about authoring, illustrating, and other writing facts. For more information, you can visit her website at www.dianedegroat.com.

We continue to work on fractions. Another fractions worksheet has gone home tonight. The topic of the worksheet asks how students find a fraction of a number. For example, what is 1/3 of 24? In this example, students are trying to find one-third of 24. This is what we talked about in class.
In addition to this worksheet, students should complete at least 20 minutes of independent reading, practice list #4 muscle words, and the math facts that they are practicing for their weekly math fact test.

Bowling Field Trip
April 22, 2008 by James Hendricks
Team Hendricks will be traveling to Lucky Strike Lanes in Mansfield Center on May 9, 2008. Students have been introduced to the sport of bowling and have been learning how to score using modified bowling sheets. The Duckpin Bowling Modified Score Sheet may be able to assist those who would like to learn at home.
Permission slips were sent home today and are due to me tomorrow (although it does say it can be turned in by Friday). There is no cost for this field trip.
It is extremely important that students find a pair of socks at home that will cover their sneakers that they will wear the day of the trip. There aren’t enough bowling shoes for 60 third graders to bowl. The bowling alley allows students to wear a pair of socks over their shoes. Students should bring their socks in as soon as they find them. We will label them and place them in lockers until the trip. If you have any trouble finding socks, please let me know. Contact information is available in the “About” link at the top of the page.
Thanks!

April 22, 2008 by James Hendricks
During the week before spring vacation, students from all over the building participated in eco activities that help our environment. With each activity, one bean was placed into a jar. A line was placed on the jar and if student beans passed the line on the jar, all students would receive no homework for the night and enjoy the great weather.
Southeast School students not only met the goal, but also exceeded the goal! So… congratulations Southeast and Team Hendricks. No homework for tonight. Go outside and enjoy the beautiful weather!
