Homework Until June 5, 2008
May 25, 2008 by James Hendricks
Last week, students were assigned a long-term project where they were asked to research a famous Connecticut person and complete a project on that individual.
As part of the project, a 2 liter soda bottle is needed because students will be building a head on top of the soda bottle so that it can be displayed. It is important that there is some sand in the bottom of the soda bottle; it makes it easier for it to remain standing while it is on display.
If your child needs assistance with the project and you have questions, please contact me as soon as you are able. I can provide some materials, if they are needed.
Lots of Things On Tap This Week!
May 25, 2008 by James Hendricks
As we wind down the school year, the number of end of the year activities begin to increase. We have a lot of things planned this week. The biggest event is our yearly field trip to Mystic Seaport. Students really like this trip (after we convince them that they aren’t going to see fish in the aquarium!). The trip will take place this coming Thursday, May 29. I would like to thank Mrs. Hartman, Mrs. Thompson, and Mrs. Tripoli for taking time out of their busy schedules to help us chaperone the field trip.
In addition to our field trip, the third installment of our enrichment clusters is on Friday. Students have been having a lot of fun learning in activities that they chose. After last Friday, I know that they are really interested in their workshops because they come back “buzzing” with excitement.
Next week’s activities will bring Mrs. Harrington back to third grade for a third science mini-workshop, the Scholastic Book Fair, and the PTO Ice Cream Social. Enjoy your week!

Bowling Done, Mystic Chaperones Selected, Clusters Start!
May 13, 2008 by James Hendricks
We had a great time bowling at Lucky Strikes Lane on Friday afternoon. It really was a blast when “Rock and Bowl” started. The music came on, the lights went out, and the kids’ energy exploded. It was spectacular to see our class work with students from Vinton and Goodwin in a cooperative math and physical education activity. Good job, Team Hendricks!
Chaperones have been selected for the Mystic Seaport trip. Notification has been sent to all parents who offered to come. To those who will be attending the trip with us, please send in your slip and $15.00 as soon as you can. This will allow us to get the deposit to Mystic as soon as possible.
Enrichment clusters start this week. The selection process was different from past years. Mrs. Irvine came around to each class and presented a PowerPoint presentation and students selected clusters in-class. This was a new selection method and it seems to have worked well. If you are a parent who is presenting a cluster, it is extremely appreciated. Students will find out their clusters soon.
I was out on sick Monday and it looks as if the “stomach bug” is starting to hit the room. Several of our team members are out today. Please keep a close eye on your child’s health over the next couple of days. This stomach bug has gotten to many of our students!
Have a wonderful week.
Homework for Monday, May 12, 2008

After being down for most of the weekend with the stomach bug that was going around in the lower wing, I should be in tomorrow. Mrs. Strimple, your substitute teacher for today, gave you a worksheet on angles. This is a review activity to something that we did earlier this marking period. Remember… You can always use your “very expensive tool” (or as non-Team Hendricks members call it… the corner of your paper) to help you out!
Nightly Homework:
- Study Challenge Level Words.
- Study math facts that you are working on for your weekly math fact test.
- Read for at least 20 minuntes.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Hispanic Culture Day, Special Persons’ Week, and Bowling On Tap This Week
May 2, 2008 by James Hendricks
On Monday, May 5 (cinco de mayo) students will be taking place in two different activities where students will learn all about the Peruvian culture. Last year, Señora Diane Hutton traveled to Peru as part of a personal and professional development activity. She has brought back many things to share with us. There will singing and dancing. Miss Betsy Parker and Mrs. Joan Carr have teamed up with Señora Hutton to bring us Hispanic Culture Day. Team Hendricks will join Mrs. Latino’s class in an activity from 9:00 to 10:00. We will then have a school-wide assembly in the afternoon as a culmination to our day. It should be exciting!
Special Persons’ Day is next is on Wednesday, May 7th from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Students have invited some family members or family friends to join our class for an hour’s worth of activities. This should be an exciting time for us to share what we have been learning.
Thursday, May 8th will be the day that we take a district-wide writing prompt. This will be the first assessment that will be used to show how your son or daughter has made progress over the school year. We will have several more tests in the coming weeks.
Finally, Team Hendricks will meet with one class from Vinton and one class from Goodwin for a bowling afternoon. Students have been practicing bowling and scoring and should have a lot of fun at this event. All permission slips and socks have been returned. Students will not be allowed to use money at the bowling alley, so they should not bring it with them.
If you have any questions, please let me know by clicking on the “About” tab in the menu bar.

Homework for May 1, 2008
May 1, 2008 by James Hendricks
As our class has been recognized by Mayor Betsy Paterson and Mansfield Youth Services for our holiday blanket project, I have awarded the students with a no homework night.
I will be out of the building tomorrow at Senteo Clicker training. It should be a fun activity. Mrs. Susan Harrington will substitute for the class tomorrow.
Have a great weekend!
